THE VVA PLANS TO HOLD its 2022 Winter Technical Meeting Feb. 17-18 both in-person at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville and as a virtual event. Meeting highlights include discussions on fighting outbreaks of spotted lanternfly, downy mildew and ripe rot; a look at new varietals to Virginia, with a focus on Tannat and white vinifera; pesticide applicator recertification; and industry exhibitors. There will also be a pre-meeting, popular virtual session on integrated disease management on Feb. 16. Click for details and to register.

Virginia Wine Board Invitation to Submit Pre-Proposal

The Virginia Wine Board (VWB) is soliciting pre-proposals to fund research, education, and marketing projects that enhance the Virginia wine industry. Projects are funded by the wine liter tax and are approved through an evaluation process. A pre-proposal system has been implemented by the Virginia Wine Board with the goal to increase the number of applicants as well as streamline the proposal preparation and review process. In collaboration with Scott Laboratories, Inc. Virginia Tech Enology Extension will offer three pre-harvest workshops. On this daylong tour we will visit a range of vineyard operations including an independent grape growing operation and several wineries in the Shenandoah Valley.  This trip will include educational vineyard walks and an opportunity to socialize with fellow grape growers.  We will go directly to the vineyard and see vine training systems at about veraison.  Growers will explain their operations and extension specialists will offer seasonal updates. Nate Walsh Takes Office as VVA President

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Nate Walsh of Walsh Family Wine formally assumed office as the new president of the Virginia Vineyards Association during its annual winter technical meeting Friday. He succeeds Tom Kelly, who led the VVA for the past four years. Ruth Saunders Named Grower of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Vineyards Association has announced that Ruth Saunders of Silver Creek Orchards in Nelson County is the organization’s 2017 Grower of the Year. The award was presented to Ms. Saunders by Megan Seibel, Assistant Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, at the VVA’s annual winter technical meeting Friday.   Ms. Saunders and her husband, John, have deep roots in Virginia’s agriculture industry. Their families have operated several hundred acres of farmland in Nelson County for generations. They raise cattle and are involved in the growing of apples and a variety of other crops, including wine grapes.
