TO LET IT HANG OR TO NOT LET IT HANG THAT IS THE QUESTION

2011-10-21T14:39:07-04:00

Hopefully you will not have much fruit left still hanging in the vineyard that is not waiting to be harvested as we do at one of our vineyards.  If you do then just how important is it to drop this fruit?  We have fruit that was hail damaged earlier in the year and fruit that simply did not ripened due to  the weather that has now been reduced to skin and seeds, which rattle when dry.  Do we go to the cost of time and expenditure to drop this fruit when there is so much else left to do in the vineyard and we have [...]

Sustainable Viticulture Practices Workbook

2011-10-01T14:11:47-04:00

To All VVA Members:  Sustainable Viticulture Practices Workbook This document is one stage of a multi-step project to guide Virginia grape producers who wish to increase the sustainability of their vineyard operations. The project has been an industry initiative from the start, and will continue to have input from end-users such as you, and from an industry steering committee. The document was distributed in draft form in August 2011 to members of the Virginia Vineyards Association. Based on feedback from that circulation, a revised scoring scheme and other, minor changes to the document were made. We would like to receive comments [...]

Grape Insect Update

2011-09-28T13:42:50-04:00

From: Doug Pfeiffer, Fruit Entomologist I wrote earlier about the likely threat of spotted wing drosophila (SWD), an invasive pest of fruit that we found in a Virginia berry plot in June.  It has subsequently been found in the three other Virginia trapping locations, and has spread north to collection points in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island. This is a much more important pest than the Drosophila species we are used to dealing with.  This species attacks ripening and ripe fruit, not restricted to soft, overripe fruit.  The female has a large, saw-toothed ovipositor,  used to cut through the [...]
