On April 19th, Virginia is launching a wine region sign program being implemented as a partnership between the Transportation and Agriculture & Forestry secretariats and the Virginia Wine Board. The first phase of this program consists of 17 signs in 5 of Virginia’s wine regions. These signs will announce to travelers on selected primary and secondary roads that they have entered a particular Virginia AVA or wine region.

The signs will draw attention to the various and diverse wine regions in the Commonwealth and encourage both Virginians and guests to Virginia to see what Virginia wine has to offer. The sign program makes Virginia wine all the more accessible by introducing travelers to the some of the signature wine areas of Virginia.

The first wine region signs to be unveiled will mark the Monticello AVA. As one of Virginia’s oldest AVA’s, Monticello encompasses an area of Virginia that has a long history in wine production. There is no other grape grower more famous than Monticello’s own Thomas Jefferson. With some of Virginia’s most esteemed wineries here in the Monticello AVA, it is fitting that travelers be made aware of their having entered this influential AVA.

The first Monticello sign will be unveiled by the First Lady of Virginia at King Family Vineyard on April 19th at 10 a.m. as part of her FLITE tour of the Monticello AVA.
